IndyCar: Wheldon muere en choque múltiple en Las Vegas

El piloto Dan Wheldon de la serie IndyCar murió el domingo debido a diversas lesiones después que su bólido volara durante un choque múltiple de 15 autos en la 13ra vuelta de la Indy 300 en Las Vegas.

Los pilotos fueron informados de la muerte de Wheldon en una reunión unas dos horas después del durísimo choque, que muchos de ellos consideraron el peor que han visto.

Wheldon, de 33 años, ganó dos veces las 500 Millas de Indianápolis, incluyendo la de este año.

"La IndyCar anuncia con mucha tristeza que Dan Wheldon falleció debido a lesiones de las que no podía sobrevivir", dijo Randy Bernard, el director de la serie. "Nuestros pensamientos y oraciones están con su familia hoy".

La IndyCar, sus pilotos y propietarios han decidido poner fin a la carrera.

En honor de Dan Wheldon, los pilotos han decidido recorrer cinco vueltas en un saludo a él", agregó.

Otros tres conductores, incluyendo el contendiente por el título Will Power, resultaron heridos
