Tom Cruise Will Sue You If You Say Mean Things About Suri
Tom Cruise really doesn't appreciate tabloid magazines saying that he's abandoned Suri.
On Wednesday, the actor filed a reported $50 million lawsuit against Life & Style and In Touch magazines, claiming the tabloids defamed him by reporting he had abandoned his 6-year-old daughter (via Blogsters).
The suit, which was filed in L.A. Federal Court, specifically takes issue with the July 30th cover of Life & Style, which reads "Suri in Tears, Abandoned By Her Dad" and the Oct. 1st cover of In Touch, which shows a sad-looking Suri above the headline "Abandoned By Daddy."
If Cruise does win the $50 million, he says he'll donate it to charity. So at least something good can come from this whole mess. What do you think?
In a statement, Cruise's lawyer Bert Fields had this to say: "Tom is a caring father who dearly loves Suri. She's a vital part of his life and always will be. To say he has 'abandoned' her is a vicious lie. To say it in lurid headlines with a tearful picture of Suri is reprehensible."
Fields added, "Tom doesn't go around suing people. He's not a litigious guy. But when these sleaze peddlers try to make money with disgusting lies about his relationship with his child, you bet he's going to sue."
The In Touch and Life & Style headlines are admittedly questionable, but does Tom Cruise really have any shot at winning this super-sized lawsuit against the rags? Attorney Rene Sandler, who has worked on defamation causes in the past, thinks that might not even be the point.
